How Mittelstand interviews differ from Berlin startup screens
Cultural cues IT candidates should expect when interviewing at established German manufacturers versus venture-backed product companies.
Berlin product companies often screen quickly: a recruiter call, a take-home or live coding block, then a values chat. Mittelstand employers — especially in automotive suppliers, industrial software, and logistics — tend to involve more stakeholders and ask more about tenure, team fit, and how you handle hierarchical decision-making.
Neither path is “better.” Candidates stumble when they use the same anecdotes for both. Prepare one story about shipping under ambiguity for startups, and another about documenting decisions and working with works councils or long-tenured colleagues for Mittelstand rounds.
If German is not your working language, clarify early whether the role operates in English day to day. Many IT teams do; many adjacent stakeholders do not. Setting that expectation politely avoids surprises in onsite weeks.
