Timing your German job search around notice periods

Why German notice periods reshape when IT specialists should start applying — and how to communicate availability without losing momentum.

German employment contracts often carry longer notice periods than candidates from other markets expect. If you are already employed in Germany, your earliest start date may be one to three months out — sometimes more at senior levels. Employers know this; hiding it creates distrust.

If you are relocating from abroad, your constraint is different: visa processing, housing, and school calendars for families. Build a realistic start window and state it in applications. Recruiters would rather plan around a clear date than chase a candidate who quietly cannot start for half a year.

In our partnerships we reverse-plan from your earliest feasible start, then decide how many active applications to run in parallel so interview peaks land when you can actually accept.
